The concept of “new power” has been named by CNN as one of ten ideas that can change the world. Originally laid out as the Big Idea in Harvard Business Reviewand subsequent TED talk and now in a book released in 2018, New Power (https://thisisnewpower.com/) offers a frame to understand the distributed and participatory models that are rising in business, life and society. New power lays out a practical framework for understanding how power is shifting: who has it, how it is shared, where it is heading – and how some major players are co-opting these new forms of participation. This workshop will dive into the concepts of New Power and how they are applicable to the current moment. Negotiating for resources. Giving feedback. Navigating conflict. Generating support for your idea. We face difficult conversations every day at work—handling them well is integral to our success. Based on the book Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most (Penguin 2000), we offer a framework for understanding why some of our most important conversations are so hard, examining the common mistakes we all make, and provide a step-by-step method for handling them with less anxiety and better results.

Through interactive exercises, relatable stories, and small and large group discussion, we introduce tools and frameworks to:

+ Unpack the underlying structure of difficult conversations

+ Increase understanding when parties see things differently

+ Navigate strong emotions (yours and theirs)

+ Speak up with clarity and impact
