In 2019, Women inPower Global will expand the program to more locations throughout the world
NEW YORK – December 7, 2018 – 92nd Street Y’s Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact announced the 2019 class of Women inPower, a fellowship program to help senior-level women advance to the highest levels of leadership across sectors. This group of 28 Fellows was selected from a pool of nearly 250 applicants. This year’s Fellows include leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions, including business, nonprofits, law, medicine, media, religion, technology, arts, higher education, philanthropy, and science. The group also includes two Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellows, a specialized track for rising female leaders in visual arts management. This one-of-a-kind free program provides women with professional development, executive mentorship, CEO workshops, and membership in an active community of female leaders. The initiative also includes a social impact component, encouraging Fellows to think ambitiously about their role in creating not only more success and power for themselves, but a healthier and more egalitarian society for all. The Behrend Fellows also receive instruction in visual arts management via monthly meetings with senior staff in various 92Y departments including marketing, development, programming and education. Fellows are mentored by a group of over 40 leaders in NYC that includes: Katherine Wu Brady, COO, Catchafire; Jimmie Briggs, Co-founder and Executive Director Emeritus, Man Up Campaign; Whitney W. Donhauser, President, Museum of the City of New York; Gillian Lester, Dean Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law, Columbia Law School; Sara Link, Head of Oath for Good & President, Oath Foundation; Tim Maleeny, President and Chief Strategy Officer, Havas; and Kristy Wallace, CEO, Ellevate Network. “Now, more than ever, it’s clear that we need gender parity in senior leadership across all sectors,” said Asha Curran, 92Y’s Chief Innovation Officer and Director of its Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact. “Women inPower creates a community in which women can individually and collectively develop leadership skills, and propel themselves and one another into positions of power. We have high expectations for our incoming class of Fellows and can’t wait to see all that they accomplish this year and in the future.” Through Women inPower Global, 92Y brings the innovative Women inPower model to cities and countries around the world. Building on the work of pilot chapters in 10 countries (including Guatemala, India, and Haiti), WiP Global is now engaging leaders in 20+ countries, convening women—in their communities and as a global, connected network— enabling them to tailor the program to a variety of local needs and developing the collective capacity to understand and change power dynamics in diverse contexts.
